How BWI leverages EU space data and assets

BWI powers continental river flow forecasting delving on EU Data Foundation as many of the data sources BWI uses come from Copernicus, EU’s Earth Observation Programme, which offers information services that draw from satellite Earth Observation and in-situ data.

Blue Water Intelligence, or BWI, builds its semi-distributed hydrological modeling on Copernicus EU data products, enabling precise river flow forecasts across European basins. At the core: a model that divides basins into hydrological response units (HRUs), compact zones that capture runoff dynamics realistically.

River network & Terrain foundation

  • EU-Hydro (Copernicus Land Monitoring Service) provides the river network, surface water bodies, and drainage structure, defining basin connectivity across EEA38+UK.
  • EU-DEM (Copernicus digital elevation model from ASTER/SRTM) sets topography for flow routing and catchment nesting via D8 flow direction algorithms.

Surface & Soil properties

  • ESA WorldCover (Sentinel-1/2 derived) maps land cover.
  • SoilGrids 250m parameterizes soil hydrology.
Together, these derive HRU properties for runoff generation.

Process modules

  • Snowmelt & evapotranspiration: FAO-56 Penman-Monteith using EU-Hydro canopy parameters and Sentinel-2 albedo (via Copernicus).
  • Data assimilation: Sparse Reduced-Rank Square-Root Kalman Filter corrects states in high-dimensional systems.
  • Baseflow: Linear reservoirs calibrated to EU-Hydro Q95 indices and WISE spring discharges.
  • Flood waves: Dynamic wave approximations for channels >50m wide (EU-Hydro thresholds).

Forcing & outputs

  • Forecasts: 10-day horizons at 10-minute timesteps, probabilistically driven by 51-member ECMWF ensembles downscaled to EU-Hydro catchments.
  • Delivery: REST API with customizable virtual stations on client-specified river segments, for flood warning and hydropower optimization.
  • Validation: Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency >0.75 on 70% of 500+ calibrated basins (vs. Vigicrues, HOBE).

Indirect Copernicus leverage

Sentinel-1/2 feeds EU-Hydro construction; CLC products support land classification. Future BWI upgrades target EU-Hydro 2.0 (enhanced wide-river mapping) and Anthropogenic Pressure layers.

BWI’s EU-centric stack delivers gauge-independent, continental-scale forecasts resilient to transboundary data gaps, trusted water intelligence for Europe’s water challenges.
