France x Nepal Hydropower Investment Summit

Tuesday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 14th, 2025 – Paris, France

Perspectives for Cooperations in Hydroelectricity

Energy demand in South Asia: a fast-growing market

In recent years, South Asia has been experiencing exceptional demographic growth—a trend expected to continue, with the population projected to increase by several hundred million people by 2040. This demographic shift is accompanied by rapid urbanization and profound changes in lifestyles across the region. As a result, energy demand—particularly electricity—is soaring, driven by rising needs in domestic, industrial, and public sectors.

Nepal: a high-potential hydroelectricity producer

With its mountainous terrain and a dense network of fast-flowing rivers, Nepal holds one of the world’s highest potentials for hydropower generation. Building on these natural resources, the country has developed solid expertise over the years in harnessing water for energy production.

Yet, Nepal’s current infrastructure and energy output remain modest and far below its estimated potential. A lack of large-scale infrastructure and limited access to financing are the main obstacles holding back the development of modern energy systems.

An ambitious and resilient low-carbon energy model

Fully aware of its geographical assets and technical know-how, Nepal has set bold goals: to expand its hydropower generation capacity from about 3.3 gigawatts in 2024 to 28 gigawatts by 2035—an eightfold+ increase in just 10 years. This growth would not only meet the country’s domestic needs but also position Nepal as a major electricity exporter to neighboring countries such as India and Bangladesh, with export agreements already in discussion at political level.

Beyond the goal of scaling up production, Nepal is shaping a long-term strategy grounded in environmental sustainability and climate commitments. The country aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 and transition to 100% renewable energy. Hydropower lies at the heart of this transformation, offering a renewable, low-carbon solution that also strengthens resilience against climate-related challenges.

A robust market with rare investment opportunities

In a global landscape where sustainable investments are gaining traction, Nepal’s hydropower development presents a rare and strategic opportunity. Backed by strong regional partnerships and a long-term national vision aligned with global climate goals, this emerging market offers the foundations for stable and impactful investment.

As the need for modern energy infrastructure continues to grow, Nepal stands out as a dynamic market on the rise—poised for rapid development and built on durable, future-oriented perspectives. Which is why European investors should get involved.
