Introducing Illia Bovtriuk – Software Engineer

We’re excited to welcome Illia Bovtriuk, Software Engineer at BWI. Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine, Illia brings a strong background in mathematics and computer science. At BWI, he works on developing algorithms to enhance hydrological forecasting accuracy and integrating new data sources to strengthen our global water intelligence capabilities.

We’re delighted to welcome Illia Bovtriuk to BWI as a Software Engineer. Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine, Illia joined the team in July 2025, bringing with him a strong foundation in mechanics and mathematics, computer science, and machine learning.

Illia shares his journey, motivations and insights into his role at BWI.

Before joining BWI, Illia built a solid background in computer science and applied mathematics, holding a degree from Université Paris-Saclay and the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. His previous roles in software development and data science helped strengthen his analytical mindset and his ability to apply  data-driven methods to real-world challenges.

At BWI, Illia focuses on developing and implementing algorithms to improve the accuracy of hydrological forecasts, including river water levels and discharge predictions. He also contributes to integrating and refining new data sources such as HydroSHEDS and Symsagel, helping strengthen BWI’s forecasting capabilities worldwide.

Illia shares that what he enjoys most at BWI is the team atmosphere and the challenging, high-impact projects, comparable to those found in major tech companies – all while contributing to a mission with tangible environmental impact.
