Introduction to Hydrological Issues – Why the Pyrenees/Pyrénées?

The webinar opened by highlighting significant hydrological problems in the Pyrénées, notably the flooding in La Grotte de Lourdes.

Additionally, in 2023, the Pyrénées-Orientales experienced only 250 millimeters of rainfall, an amount typical of the Sahel (semiarid region) rather than a mountainous region in Europe. This dramatic reduction in precipitation has equally raised alarms regarding water availability.

Consequently, in addition to the dual issue of flooding and drought,  the webinar outlined several critical challenges:

  1. Equitable Water Sharing: Ensuring that water resources are shared fairly among various users.
  2. Imbalance between Supply and Demand: Addressing the growing disparity between available water resources and community needs.
  3. Climate Change Effects: Coping with increasing frequencies of floods and droughts due to climate change.

Later in the session, we introduced BWI and discussed how our hydrological services could support communities in the Pyrénées. Our solutions could address the specific needs of the area by providing data-driven insights and strategies for sustainable water management. For this reason, we showcased how to easily use our river discharge and water level monitoring and forecasting solutions. Furthermore, we equally elaborated on the performance of our services and how reliable of an aid they can be.

The webinar concluded with a Q&A segment, allowing participants to engage and inquire further about the discussed topics.

Through this webinar, BWI aimed to collaboratively explore hydrological issues facing the Pyrénées and explore the potential solutions for the future.

We are truly grateful for the active participation and enriching insights and questions of our webinar participants.
